यौनिकता विचार, परिकल्पना, इच्छा, विश्वास, अभिवृत्ति, मूल्यों, व्यवहार, अनुभव एवं संबंधों में महसूस एवं अभिव्यक्त की जाती है।

यद्यपि यौनिकता के अंतर्गत उपरोक्त सभी पहलू आते हैं परन्तु सभी एक साथ महसूस एवं अभिव्यक्त नहीं किए जा सकते हैं।

यौनिकता पर जैविक, मनोवैज्ञानिक, सामाजिक, आर्थिक, राजनैतिक, सांस्कृतिक, नैतिक, कानूनी, ऐतिहासिक, धार्मिक एवं आध्यात्मिक कारकों का प्रभाव पड़ता है।

दूसरी ओर, किसी व्यक्ति की यौनिक पहचान इस बात से निर्धारित होती है कि वे किस जेन्डर के व्यक्ति की ओर यौन आकर्षण महसूस करते हैं।
